COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (NBC33) – The Whitley County Republican Party has chosen a new Auditor.
Jana Schinbeckler, 23, was elected the new Whitley County Auditor Wednesday night.
Twenty-five of the 29 Whitley County Republican Committee Members eligible to vote showed up, making 13 votes the magic number to win. Shinebeckler won with 20 votes.
"I am ready to dive in and start making the changes that need to be done in the office, and just be always in communication with everyone. All around I'm just very very excited to represent Whitley County, said Schinbeckler.
The caucus was organized after former Auditor Jennifer McGuire suddenly resigned amid controversy and investigations by the Indiana State Police and State Board of Accounts in August for "alleged impropriates".
However, McGuire tendered her resignation after the withdrawal date for the November election, leaving her name on the ballot.
"There's a lot of what-ifs, so from what I understand it's her intention to resign if her name's still on the ballot. But, intentions can change,” said Matt Boyd the Whitley County Republican Chair.
In the meantime, Schinbeckler, who's worked every position in the Auditor's office, says there's some changes to be made.
"I want to make sure that the all the departments that they get the reports that they need to know what is in their funds, and to make sure that we are all on the same page and they're constantly in contact with me making sure we're matching and balancing what they have," said Schinbeckler.
Schinbeckler says she plans to run for Auditor one day, but for now, will fulfill the duties for the remainder of the term, which ends December 31, 2014.
