VAN WERT, Ohio (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- Folks in Northwest Ohio will be among those from ten states who will head to the polls March 6th to cast ballots in the all important "Super Tuesday" primary.
Jeff Neumeyer: " There are some local races of interest in Van Wert County, including two county commissioner contests.
But most everyone is focused on who will win the Republican Presidential nomination in the Buckeye state.
Rick Santorum was leading Mitt Romney by 9 points in one poll taken last week, but Romney has been closing the gap ever since, setting up what figures to be a real dogfight on Tuesday.
Given that, you would expect a pretty strong voter turnout.
The county's Republican Party chairman, however, is not so sure."
Martin Burchfield/Van Wert Co. GOP Chairman: " I'm not expecting that, because our absentee or early voting totals are not quite as high as they have been in the past. I do believe it's gotten a little more exciting as we've gotten closer to the election, so maybe some people that might have voted earlier are going to vote later than normal."
Neumeyer: " In Michigan last week, there was a lot of talk about Democrats crossing over and voting for Santorum, figuring he would be an easier general election opponent for President Obama.
They can do that in Michigan, where they have an open primary.
In Ohio, you have to sign a form declaring your politics, in order to vote in either primary.
The Board of Elections catches some grief about that.
Linda Stutz/Director Board of Elections: " Most people do not like to do that. They want to vote for the person, and so we'll get a phone call, telling us that it's really none of our business in no uncertain terms, as to what party they want to vote."
Neumeyer: " In Van Wert County, voters make their choices on paper ballot, then feed their card into an optical scanning machine that speeds up the tabulation process.
The polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m., with meaningful results expected between 9 and 10 Tuesday evening.
