FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – Although Memorial Day is a day to remember our fallen troops, for many Americans this weekend marks the unofficial start to Summer.
The American Red Cross offers everyone some helpful tips to stay safe this weekend: as always, there will be millions of people traveling, so stay safe on the roads by staying alert, and wear your seatbelt. If you plan to drink alcohol, designate a sober driver.
If you plan to grill out like many Americans, we’ve got some tips for that as well: never grill indoors, always supervise the grill, and always be prepared in case the grill gets too hot.
Memorial Day weekend also comes with a warning for ATV riders.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports a spike in ATV-related injuries and deaths around the holiday weekend.
Last Memorial Day weekend, 14 people died with nearly 3,000 emergency room injuries. So how can you keep your family safe?
• Don’t allow children under the age of 16 to drive or ride on adult ATV’s
• Never allow a child younger than six-years-old on an ATV.
• Always wear a helmet and protective gear, and don't drive on paved roads.
