FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – A Fort Wayne mother whose child attends Purdue University shares her feelings when she heard about the shooting on campus.
Hearing about a shooting at your child's school is a parent's worst nightmare, especially when you're hours away.
21Alive caught up with a Fort Wayne mother whose daughter attends Purdue’s main campus in West Lafayette where the shooting occurred Tuesday afternoon.
Shelvy Lewis says she's never had to experience that type of fear before, but she was relieved to get a phone call from her daughter Tuesday morning saying she was safe.
Lewis says her daughter, Ashley, is a sophomore at Purdue University majoring in Horticulture.
Lewis says she’s thankful she heard the news from Ashley before hearing about it on the news or radio, and her daughter forwarded the text message alert sent out by the university.
Lewis says Ashley told her she was in her apartment at the time, but had been in contact with her friends who were on campus.
"I asked her, so what about your friends and how are you? Some were in the Union, and they just basically had lockdown every where across campus. No matter where the kids were, they were to stay, and they locked them in where ever they were at,” said Lewis.
When Lewis asked her daughter what she had heard about the shooting, Ashley told her she had heard several different rumors through social media.
“She said, ‘Well of course there's Twitter, there's Facebook and there's a lot of rumors’, but they hadn't heard anything definite,” said Lewis. "They had heard two were killed, they had heard just a TA was shot, they had heard no one was hurt and there were just shots. So she didn't really know what the facts were yet."
Authorities confirmed later Tuesday afternoon that one person is dead and police have one person in custody.
Purdue University sent out an announcement that classes will be suspended through Wednesday.
