FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – It’s the time of year for “The Big Event” and we’re not talking about March Madness.
You can't have too many helping hands when it comes to "The Big Event" of cleaning. “The Big Event" is a national day of service where hundreds of thousands of volunteers from more than 80 universities across the country help out in their communities.
This is IPFW’s second year participating in the event. The university sent out 900 volunteers to more than 40 local not-for-profit agencies to help out with whatever's needed whether that's raking leaves, painting, cleaning, or organizing.
Student life coordinator at IPFW James Velez says it's an enlightening and educational experience.
“We've had a lot of responses from last year and even this year where the students are coming back saying how much the BIG event meant to them, how it really changed their perspective, how they saw things happening at agencies that they didn't really know about,” said Velez.
The not-for-profit agencies all applied to be a part of the event. As long as IPFW sees the need for work to be done, the agencies are selected.
