FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – Many different things are affected by the cold temperatures and endless snow—particularly the road under your tires.

The frigid weather can take a toll on roadways by creating treacherous potholes and impeding on efforts to repair them.

Indiana Governor Mike Pence has declared that the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will be repairing potholes on days crews can brave the elements.

But one of the most important aspects of the job Is ensuring the safety of the crews.

“We have to make sure that everybody is safe,” said Toni Mayo with INDOT Communications.

“So we may have our flaggers, we may have pickup trucks with flashers, there're lots of different amounts of crews but it is always safety first. With these temperatures the guys and gals are going to get in, they're going to fill those potholes, they're going to get back in the trucks to get warm. We just got to keep everybody safe.”

Mayo says crews will attempt to keep up with potholes whenever possible during these cold temperatures, but will continue into a normal schedule when the weather thaws into Spring.

If you see a pothole out on the road you can report it on INDOT’s website at www.in.gov/indot, or on their Facebook and Twitter pages.
