FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- The Fort Wayne mayor's race is over, but some of the hard feelings will apparently linger into the weeks beyond the final vote tabulations.
The campaign was marked by lots of attack ads from both sides, and Republican challenger Paula Hughes is not ready to forgive and forget in every instance.
Hughes lost by less than four points to Democrat incumbent Tom Henry Tuesday night.
The exchange of negative ads starting in August included some television commercials and mailers that were more personal.
A Henry mailer suggesting she failed to pay taxes in a struggling business venture particularly irritated Hughes.
Hughes, who appeared on “INC Today” Wednesday morning, said she phoned the mayor to congratulate him on the win, but by mid-day Wednesday the two had still not spoken.
Henry told us at his victory gathering, he'd welcome a sit down meeting with his opponent.
Mayor Tom Henry/(D) Fort Wayne: " I believe that she said she had an 8-point plan for the city, I would love to hear what she had to say. Certainly I would love to sit down with Ms. Hughes and talk to her about her vision for the city."
Paula Hughes/(R) Ft. Wayne Mayoral Nominee: " The two of us went head to head, and it got pretty nasty at points, and there are some things that will not die down from that, that we'll be addressing sometime in the next month or so."
We couldn't reach Hughes Wednesday afternoon for clarification, but we received information that Hughes is exploring using funds left over from the campaign to pursue some sort of legal action regarding the mailer.
Hughes also said on "INC Today" that she did not have sufficient funding to defend herself against a barrage of negative ads by Henry in August, because she had not yet replenished her campaign warchest from the contentious Republican Primary.
In fairness, there were plenty of negative ads generated by the Hughes campaign as well.
We wait to see if the two community leaders can find a way to set aside their differences.
