Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Gunfire rings out from a passing car in south Fort Wayne Wednesday morning, and stray bullets nearly take out an innocent bystander.
The crime prompted a chase and an apprehension, but at last report one suspect was still on the loose.
Fort Wayne police say the apparent target of the drive-by shooting, 19-year-old Calvin Keys, was grazed in the hip, but a neighbor in the line of fire was nearly an unintended victim of the violence.
About 10:15 a.m., Keys was mowing his grandmother's lawn in the 4600 block of Euclid Avenue, when a brown-colored Impala pulled up and shots were fired at the man working.
Bullets whizzed through the yard, striking a truck parked in a neighbor's driveway.
Other shells broke out Gary and Deloris McKee’s kitchen window and punctured a piece of their siding.
We talked to police who had to sort out what really happened.
" The passenger leaned out the window, armed with a gun, at which time the victim began running away from the vehicle, and that's when the shots were fired," said John Chambers, with Fort Wayne PD.
" Innocent bystanders are being shot, they're getting off too easy. They're being hit on the wrist and hey, you go on out there and shoot some more, that's the way it seems," said Deloris McKee, who was a few feet from one of the bullets that tore into her home.
The shooters did not make a clean getaway.
Responding officers got on the trail of the brown Impala, chased it to the Anthony and McKinnie intersection, where the driver stopped, and the two suspects jumped out.
The driver, 18-year-old Jakwan Braster, was caught but his passenger got away.
Police dogs were brought in to try and pick up the suspect’s scent, but it did not produce results in the first several hours after the incident occurred.
There’s no word on motive.
