FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – The Fort Wayne Fire and Police Federal Credit Union and the Fraternal Order of Police were out fitting children for bike helmets.

The Credit Union donates annually to help the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) purchase the helmets.

Last year the group gave out over 1,000 helmets to children in the area.

As summer rolls along with kids playing outside, ensuring they're properly equipped with helmets is crucial.

“Wearing a helmet on a bicycle is very important, especially in the summertime. They're going to be riding their bikes around a lot more and some neighborhoods don't have sidewalks, so we want to keep them safe on the roads,” said Melisa Miller, a marketing associate for the Fire Police Credit Union.

Miller says that over 100 helmets were given away Saturday.
