FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – The first steps to adding Firefighter Mark Haudenschild II’s name to the Law Enforcement Firefighter's Memorial of Allen County took place Saturday afternoon.

Haudenschild was 26-years old when he was killed last November when his truck crashed into several utility poles on Hillegas Road.

Friends and family were present at the memorial, and though time has passed, they say it hasn't been any easier.

"You never think you'd see your friend's name on a stone on a memorial. So, it's still kind of surreal. You know there's still always going to be a hole, but I think it gives us a lot of reason to drive on, inspiration, knowing that he's looking down on us, keeping us safe. This memorial is something for us always to keep remembering him,” said Matt Seftick, friend and fellow firefighter.

A formal ceremony at the memorial is set for October 12.
