INDIANA, (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- Will Indiana’s governor have to choose between protecting his family’s privacy and running for President?

An unusual event in Daniels' marital history could subject he and his wife to uncomfortable media scrutiny.

It’s further proof that the private lives of public officials are often not so private.

Former President Bill Clinton's extra marital affairs were opened wide for all to see.

GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's divorces and history of infidelity will surely dog him in the campaign.

Mitch Daniels' wife Cheri could become a campaign issue for her husband.

Indiana's first lady divorced Daniels in the 1990's, moved to California to re-marry, leaving him to raise their four daughters.

She later divorced and re-married Daniels in 1997.

If Daniels runs for the White House, the media could well push for an explanation.

We hit the streets Thursday to see if folks in Fort Wayne think it's fair game in a presidential campaign.

Martha Wasson/Be Ready for Scrutiny: " If he and his wife decide that they want to run, then they need to be prepared for all of that to come out, maybe address it early."

Donald Fugate/Not a Campaign Issue: " I think at one time that was pretty important, but I believe our culture has changed and Mitch ought to do what he thinks is best for America."

Samuel Melo/He Should Answer Questions: " I personally will not judge him for that, I think it's a personal matter. But because it's in the public eye, I think he should respond if he has an answer."

The issue is timely because Cheri Daniels was picked to be the keynote speaker at an Indianapolis Republican Party fundraiser Thursday night, one of the rare times she has stepped out of the background to take a high profile role in politics.

Political observers think it could signal Daniels is getting closer to throwing his hat in the ring for a White House run in 2012.
