FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – A County Councilman and U.S. Congressman reflects on the importance of Memorial Day.
As we celebrate Memorial Day on Monday, we remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
A local church held a Memorial Day appreciation service to honor those who have died in the line of duty Sunday morning.
At the service, Allen County Councilman Kevin Howell (D – Dist. 1) took the opportunity to update the congregation on an event he's been working on for months.
This fall will mark the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Vietnam War. Howell says the Vietnam War was very unpopular in America and when the troops returned home they were treated poorly.
So, Howell says he wants to honor those veteran's with a proper homecoming in October at the War Memorial Coliseum. He says Memorial Day weekend is a good time to remind people of this upcoming event.
“Every Memorial Day, makes it real for Americans that men and women actually died for the freedoms that we have,” said Howell.
Howell, being a veteran himself, says he knows how important American freedom is, and he wants Americans everywhere to realize it, too.
“There are thousands and thousands of people from around the world who are literally losing their lives trying to get into the United States, but there's not one person, if he or she wants to leave the United States, no one's going to stop him or her. That should say it all right there,” he said.
We’ll have more information on the gathering honoring Vietnam veterans at the Memorial Coliseum as it becomes available.
U.S. Congressman Marlin Stutzman (R – 3rd Dist.) showed his support by also attending the church service Sunday morning. Stutzman and his wife both spoke at the service. They spoke about Memorial Day and took a few minutes to praise our great country.
“The reason that it's great is because we have men and women who are willing to serve around the world to protect the freedoms that we have here in the U.S., and that we're so blessed by people who are willing to put on the uniform and put their lives on the line, and that's what makes this country great,” said Stutzman.
The congressman also praised the church for holding a Memorial Day service, saying churches like Cathedral of Praise Ministries International are also what makes this country so great.
