FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – A local U.S. Senator continues to urge President Obama not to take action against Syria.

President Obama is now back at the White House. The President returned from Moscow where he attended the G20 Summit with other world leaders.

While the summit focused on economic issues, the issue of Syria loomed over the atmosphere in St. Petersburg, Russia after recent proposals find the U.S. and Russia on opposite sides.

21Alive spoke with U.S. Senator Dan Coats on the issue: “You know the history of foreign relations between the United States and Russia hasn't been a pretty picture. There have been times of relative calm and times of real disputes and currently President Putin and President Obama don't seem to be anywhere close to an agreement on very many things, but we need to put our country's strategic interests ahead of what Russia's views are. They blocked us at the United Nations and in other ways and they're supplying the current regime in Syria, and that is not to our best interests,” said Coats (R – Indiana).

While at the G20 summit, the President announced he will lay out his best case for retaliation on Syria Tuesday night in a talk with the American people.
