FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – It was an even more severe weather event—a typhoon—that left thousands of people in the Philippines dead, and others without food and shelter.

That’s why a congregation in Fort Wayne is pulling together to send 20,000 meal packages there as part of the relief effort.

The people at Trinity English Lutheran Church believe community is more than just Fort Wayne.

"We're called by the Gospel to share what we have with others, and we try as a congregation on a regular basis to engage in hands-on service to help people in our community and our world,” said Pastor Dan Fugate.

It's been almost two weeks since Typhoon Hiyan hit the Philippines leaving parts of the country devastated.

Now the church, partnered with Kids Against Hunger, are packaging 20,000 meals to send overseas to the thousands of people in need.

"We really wanted to help with all the people, with our brothers and sisters in Christ, and we just decided this would be a cool thing to do,” said volunteer Jason Fugate.

Jason says 170 volunteers came out in droves to help with the relief effort.

"We actually ran out of hair nets,” added volunteer Meredith Bower.

The volunteers formed an assembly line of rice and soy and carefully packaged them to make the four-day journey.

“Everyone is working together really well around here,” said Meredith.

Pastor Dan says $4,600 in donations made it possible to pay for food and shipping. He's thankful for that, but more so for the people doing the service that god has called them to do.

"To me it's just an example of the kind of wonderful people that we have here who take their faith seriously and are willing to give of themselves in order to help other people."

If you’d like to help in the relief effort, Pastor Dan says they’re still accepting donations at Trinity English Lutheran Church, 405 W. Wayne Street in Fort Wayne.
