FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - Law enforcement officials in Indiana and Ohio are encouraging citizens to turn in any expired or unused medication Saturday.
From 10 a.m. through 2 p.m., local agencies are teaming with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration for he 7th annual Drug Take Back Day.
Drug Take Back Day offers an opportunity to dispose of unwanted pills, capsules and liquids with no questions asked.
Authorities say flushing medicines down toilets or throwing them in the trash pose both safety and health risks.
At the previous Drug Take Back Day, Hoosiers turned in more than 11½ tons of medications, according to the Indiana Attorney General's Office.
In Indiana, medications can be taken to any Indiana State Police Post except the Toll Road Post in Bristol, Ind.
