FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- An older Fort Wayne man, who was convicted of molesting two young girls, learns his fate from an Allen County judge.
The punishment handed down to Raul Fuentes amounts to a life sentence.
The sentence given to the 75-year old Fuentes totaled 45 years on seven counts of felony child molesting.
With normal good time jail credit, Fuentes would be over 100 years old before paying his full debt to society.
He doesn't figure to live nearly that long.
Fuentes was transported to and from court on Friday in a wheelchair.
He needs oxygen, and suffers from an assortment of health problems.
The case dates back to 2011, when a woman reported to city police that Fuentes had molested her daughter.
Soon after, another woman came forward and reported that he had fondled her daughter.
The 9 and 12-year old girls both claimed Fuentes used candy and jewelry, bribing them into performing sexual favors.
At trial in March, DNA collected in the case could not prove rape or other sex crimes, but the testimony of the victims were critical in securing convictions.
It is a shame that he is so old, and the sentence is a life sentence. That's not what either girl wanted, but we take our defendants and our children as they come, and that's what the sentence was, and we think it was the right sentence," said Stacey Speith, a deputy prosecutor.
In the courtroom, Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull scolded Fuentes, saying, “These girls trusted you, but by your actions, you've torn your family apart."
The mother of one of the victims didn't want to be identified.
" Basically, I just wanted to say, I'm glad it's done and over with, and we're just ready to move on with our lives," she said.
" He wanted to fully explain to every member of the family, to the grandchildren in particular, that he apologized about all that had occurred, that he's extremely remorseful," said Richard Thonert, the defense attorney.
Fuentes indicated in court, he intends to appeal, seeking a reduced sentence.
