FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – Fort Wayne Police are investigating the city’s 20th homicide of 2013. Wednesday night 42-year-old Russell Jewel was shot and killed during an argument with a family member.
It happened on the city’s southwest side in the 5000 block of Wisteria Lane. Neighbors called police after the argument escalated. When police arrived they found Jewel with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead by medics at the scene.
The other man involved in the fight was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.
No charges have been filed yet in the case.
As the community sees another domestic argument turn deadly, leaders at the local chapter of the YWCA are hoping more people will reach out to them for help.
"It's frustrating and it's heartbreaking because you think, oh if they had just called, you know, just that one step intervention, maybe it wasn't to the police but at least to us, we could at least have gotten involved and help safety plan or perhaps defuse the situation before it happened," said Mary Jo Hardiman, Chief Program Officer, YWCA.
The YWCA offers several resources to help people in domestic violence situations. They have a crisis line for people who need help immediately. That number is 1-800-441-40-73.
