FORT WAYNE (www.incnow.tv) - The Erie BayHawks spoiled opening night for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants as hot-shooting guards Nick Covington and D.J. Kennedy led Erie to a 109-100 victory Friday night at the Memorial Coliseum.
The Ants struggled all night to get their offense untracked, and the BayHawks took advantage in the second quarter, starting out with a 19-6 run that pushed their lead to 21 points, and they led 58-43 at the half.
The Ants went on a 18-7 run to cut the lead down to six with :48.9 seconds remaining in the game, but got no closer.
The BayHawks were led by Covington with 27 points and Kennedy with 21 and ten rebounds.
Ron Howard led the Mad Ants with 27 points, followed by Walker Russell, Jr. with 17 points and 6 assists.
Indiana Pacer assignees Miles Plumlee (5 points and 12 rebounds) and Orlando Johnson (15 points and 6 rebounds) had solid debuts for the Ants, who host Maine on Sunday.
