FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - Bishop Dwenger High School is coming off its worst football season in more than a decade.
The Saints finished below .500 for the first time since 2000, but managed to win a 4A sectional championship along the way. The postseason run provides a little momentum heading into 2013.
"We knew with this particular group, once they got to this stage, that they should be battle-tested, should know the routine and should have very high goals," head coach Chris Svarczkopf says.
Dwenger returns 17 starters, and sits No. 6 in the 4A preseason IFCA coaches poll. Quarterback Mike Fiacable returns from a torn ACL that sidelined him the whole year. And the defense lost only two cornerbacks to graduation.
"Our defense, I think, we just got got it all. We got corners coming back. We got safeties, we got linebackers, we got everybody coming back." center/defensive tackle Nathan Niese says.
Tradition is a big deal at Bishop Dwenger, and the Saints are ready to regain that tradition again.
Dwenger opens with South Side on Friday night.
