LAS VEGAS (21Alive) - At their annual meeting in Las Vegas last week, the ECHL Board of Governors approved several league changes, namely conference alignment and playoff format.

The ECHL has moved the Fort Wayne Komets to the Western Conference. The Komets along with Evansville, Indianapolis, Kalamazoo and Colorado will make up the Midwest Division.

As the schedule stands right now, the Komets are not slated to play Colorado this upcoming season.

Western Conference
Midwest Division

  • Fort Wayne Komets
  • Colorado Eagles
  • Evansville IceMen
  • Indianapolis Fuel
  • Kalamazoo K-Wings
  • Pacific Division

  • Alaska Aces
  • Bakersfield Condors
  • Idaho Steelheads
  • Ontario Reign
  • Stockton Thunder
  • Utah Grizzlies

    Eastern Conference
    North Division

  • Cincinnati Cyclones
  • Elmira Jackals
  • Reading Royals
  • Toledo Walleye
  • Wheeling Nailors
  • South Division

  • Florida Everblades
  • Greenville Road Warriors
  • Gwinnett Gladiators
  • Orlando Solar Bears
  • South Carolina Stingrays
  • Additionally, the ECHL changed the format of the Kelley Cup Playoffs beginning with the 2014-15 season. The top four teams (16 teams total) from each division will qualify for the playoffs. The first round games (division semi-finals) will be played entirely within the division. From there, each round will be sequenced as division finals, conference finals and league finals.

The ECHL will implement hybrid icing, which allows linesmen to blow the puck dead if the official determines the play would result in an icing. The NHL also uses hybrid icing.

For overtime periods during regular season games, teams will start at opposite ends of which they started the game.
