TinCaps Fall Short in Sweep Bid

EASTLAKE, Ohio – For the second time in three days, the Fort Wayne TinCaps played a shortened game, succumbing to both the rain and the Lake County Captains in a 2-1 loss on Tuesday night. Heavy rain, thunder and lightning rolled into Classic Park in the middle of the fifth inning, ending Fort Wayne’s bid for a three-game series sweep against Lake County.

The TinCaps were looking for their first three-game road sweep dating back to August 13-15, 2011 against the Lansing Lugnuts. Fort Wayne (8-4, 39-43) fell behind 1-0 in the bottom half of the second on Tuesday, as Captains first baseman Alex Monsalve homered to the bleachers in left, off of TinCaps starter Ruben Mejia (1-3).

The TinCaps responded in the third, with Travis Jankowski lacing a one-out triple to put himself in scoring position. In just five games with Fort Wayne, the 44th overall pick in this year’s draft has two triples. One batter later, Tyler Stubblefield singled to left to bring Jankowski home and tie the game at one. Over the first four innings, Fort Wayne put five runners in scoring position against Captains starter Elvis Araujo (3-6), but only pushed across one baserunner.

Jerrud Sabourin plated the go-ahead run for the Lake County (6-6, 37-44) in the fourth inning with an RBI single to plate Jordan Smith. Mejia was aided by the arm of catcher Austin Hedges, who threw out Bryson Myles as he tried to steal second, and that putout ended the inning, stranding a runner at third base.

The rains came in the middle of the fifth inning, with the Captains due up to bat. The game did not resume, as the field had by that point become unplayable.

Fort Wayne returns home Wednesday for a three-game set with the Bowling Green Hot Rods. The scheduled starters are Frank Garces for the TinCaps and Roberto Gomez for the Hot Rods. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
