NEW HAVEN, Ind. (21Alive) - A cornerstone of a New Haven football team that won its first conference championship in 25 years has been selected 21Alive/Parkview Sports Medicine Football Player of the Week.
Running back/linebacker Ariest Vasquez also led the Bulldogs to their first win over Homestead in a decade.
"I was tired of losing to Homestead all the time," Vasquez laments. "Coach (Jim Rowland) prepared us really well all week; and I knew we could do it.
Vasquez ran for 197 yards and 3 touchdowns against the Spartans. He also was in on a number of tackles on the defensive side of the ball.
"For a big guy, he can move," Rowland says of Vasquez, listed as 6'0" and 212 lbs. "He prepares us on both sides of the ball."
For the season, Vasquez has nearly 800 yards rushing on 76 carries. He leads the team with tackles.
New Haven is pleased with the league crown, but is already focusing on 4A sectional play.
"Our school's proud of us for doing this," Vasquez basked Friday night. "It means a lot to me; but, we want to go further than the NHC."
The Dawgs travel to South Side for opening round sectional action Friday.
