LAFAYETTE (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Defending 1A state champ Lafayette Central Catholic broke open a close game in the second half to down Churubusco 42-14 in the 1A football semi-state game in Lafayette Friday night.

The Knights were down early as Churubusco went in front on a Kyle Monk to kyle Mathewson touchdown pass, but Central Catholic regained the lead on a Cody Christopger touchdown run to lead 14-8 at halftime.

A big third quarter ended up putting the game out of reach of the underdog Eagles, who got 180 rushing yards from Mathewson, who also threw a touchdown pass to Hunter Nicodemus.

The win sends Lafayette Central Catholic to the 1A title game next Friday night in Indianapolis against Fountain Central.

Churubusco's season ends at 12-2.
