FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - Carroll High School football player Drue Tranquill verbally committed to Purdue University on Tuesday night.

Tranquill, a senior, says he chose Purdue because of the fit he had with the coaches, the feedback he got from current players on new head coach Darrell Hazell and his staff, the desire to earn an engineering degree.

"It felt like home when I went down there," Tranquill says. "The two biggest things for me were getting around the coaching staff and getting around the players. A lot of times in recruiting, coaches can hype it up sometimes to what it isn't. Getting around the players is huge."

The announcement comes amid a recruiting battle for Tranquill between the Boilermakers, Indiana University and the University of Cincinnati.

Tranquill, who plays both ways for the Chargers, was recruited as a linebacker, garnering a 4-star rating from Scout and a 3-star rating from ESPN. The 6'2", 210 lb. senior was clocked at a 4.4 second 40-yard dash at Purdue earlier this spring. That speed could transition to safety, if the Boilers beckon.

"In today's game, it's fast outside linebackers," Tranquill says. "The game's switching to spread. To have those fast athletes on the field, you're going to have to have it."

Tranquill says he spent the past 48 hours speaking with all three schools before he made his decision public. He traveled to West Lafayette on Monday and Bloomington on Tuesday, according to his Twitter feed.

"Purdue's very fortunate to get him," Carroll head football coach Doug Dinan says. "He's team first. He's a great leader. Academically, he's a tremendous student. He's an A+ student. All those things are attributes that any college is going to be excited to have."

University of Notre Dame was a fourth option for a while, but eventually the Fightin' Irish were out of the running.

Tranquill tallied 40 tackles (7 for loss) and 1 interception in his junior season.
