SOUTH BEND, Ind. (21Alive) - Redshirt junior Everett Golson will start for Notre Dame in the season opener Aug. 30 home against Rice.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly announced the decision on Wednesday. Golson gets the nod over freshman Malik Zaire.

Golson was the Notre Dame starter in 2012-13, leading the Irish to an undefeated regular season and to the BCS National Championship Game. Shortly after the season, Golson was suspended from the university on academic violations. He would be readmitted to Notre Dame in December of 2013.

Golson threw for 2,405 yards, 12 touchdowns, 6 interceptions and 58.8 percent completions in 2012-13. He also rushed for 298 yards and 6 touchdowns on the ground.
