EAST LANSING, Mich. (21Alive) - Fort Wayne native Russell Byrd will transfer to an NAIA school to finish his collegiate career.
The Spartans granted Byrd's release Sunday, and the guard will move to Master's College near Los Angeles.
"Grateful to all of them for the four years at MSU and the opportunity to play for such a great program, at a fantastic University," Byrd posted on his Instagram (@RByrd0). "Going to miss all the GREAT times with my teammates more than anything, but once brothers, always brother."
140 characters isn't enough, it's all I got though. Love MSU and everything it gave me, only wish I could have gave MSU more— Russell Byrd (@russellbyrd24) May 21, 2014
Byrd was recruited by Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo out of Blackhawk Christian High School, but injuries plagued his time in East Lansing. He averaged 3.1 points per game in 35 games total games played.
