Fort Wayne, IN - Sophomore guard Jeremy Mixon scored 17 points and senior forward Deilvez Yearby was a block short of a triple-double, as IPFW captured its second straight Summit League game, 78-69 over UMKC on Saturday night at the Memorial Coliseum.
Junior guard Zach Plackemeier got the 'Dons hot shooting night off to a great start with a triple and a 15-footer, giving IPFW an early, 5-0 lead.
Mixon went on his own personal 6-0 run in the middle of the half to give IPFW a 12-point cushion, 22-10 with 8:48 remaining.
UMKC would cut the Mastodons lead back to five on a 3-pointer by freshman forward Kirk Korver, but junior guard Ben Botts nailed a triple of his own to give IPFW a 36-28 lead at the half.
Defensively, IPFW held UMKC to just 29.6% shooting in the opening half with Yearby rejected four shots.
The Kangaroos (8-9, 2-4 SL) scored the first bucket in the second half, but IPFW would go on a 10-0 run to push the lead to 16. Senior guard Nick Daniels had the final five points of that run.
The 'Dons took their biggest lead of the game as junior forward Antwone Snead finished off a nice dish from Daniels inside making it, 62-41 at the 8:41 mark.
From there, the only drama was if Yearby would record only the second triple-double in IPFW history.
With 12 points, 10 rebounds, and a new school record nine blocks, Yearby looked like he pulled off the feat, but he was whistled for body contact after blocking a shot by LaTreze Mushatt with 1:16 left. Yearby would foul out with his fifth and the 'Dons coasted to the final of 78-69.
" I thought we did a really, really nice job on the defensive end," IPFW head coach Dane Fife said. "Two things we've really talked about were ball movement and defending and I thought we did that very well. Just very please with every player. Just a solid game all-around by our team."
IPFW was led in scoring by Mixon with 17 points on 7-9 shooting.
Botts finished with 16 points including four triples and Daniels added 10.
Yearby broke his own school record of seven blocks in a game. His old mark was set on Februrary 7, 2009 vs. Oral Roberts.
The Mastodons finished the night shooting 51.8% from the floor while holding UMKC to just 35.0%.
With the win, IPFW improves to 8-9 and 3-4 in Summit League play. IPFW will now hit the road for the next four games beginning with a pair in the Dakotas. The Mastodons head to Brookings, South Dakota to take on South Dakota State on Thursday (1/21) then go to Fargo, North Dakota on Saturday to face North Dakota State. Both games can be heard on Fort Wayne's ESPN 1380 AM at 8:00 p.m.
Note: Former Mastodon Demetrius Johnson registered IPFW's lone triple-double vs. UMKC on 12/8/07 (17 pts., 13 reb., 12 assists)
