Fort Wayne (incnow.tv)- University of Saint Francis junior running back Antoin Campbell will miss the rest of the 2013 season because of a season-ending knee injury.
Campbell (Springboro, OH / Springboro H.S.) suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the first quarter of the Cougars’ 23-7 loss at Grand View University on Saturday. He had rushed for back-to-back career bests of 188 yards and 190 yards in the Cougars’ first two wins and had scored seven touchdowns, six rushing and one receiving. He had five carries for 16 yards with a long run of seven yards at GVU. The injury happened on the first play of the Cougars’ third offensive series.
“One minute after he finds out, he turned with tears in his eyes and asked me ‘what can I do know to help,’ “ USF Head Coach Kevin Donley said. “Everybody is concerned about him and we are saddened for him. All our kids feel bad for Antoin because he’s such a great young man.”
Campbell will have surgery to repair the injury, though no date has been scheduled.
Donley said junior running back Garrett Harvey takes over at No. 1 with freshman Aaron Harris (5-9, 192, Whiteland, IN/Whiteland Community H.S.) slotted at No. 2 and freshman Jason Nicodemus (5-9, 200, Churubusco, IN / Churubusco H.S.) in the rotation.
“We’ll probably do it by committee. Nicodemus is kind of a young version of Taylor Vieck and Harris kind of reminds me of (Corey) Jacquay,” Donley observed. “They’re young, but I told them they are gonna have to start shavin’ soon. First two wins, we really put the ball in Campbell’s hands and now we’re gonna have to be a little more creative.”
Campbell is No. 5 on the USF career rushing list with 2,275 yards, a 5.3 average per carry. With 42 points this season, Campbell had moved up to No. 7 on the USF career scoring list with 176 points.
