MACOMB, Ill. (www.incnow.tv) - Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne's athletic director Tommy Bell has been hired as the new athletic director at Western Illinois University.

"There's this pride an excellence when the student-athletes are on the field representing Western," Bell says at a Monday afternoon press conference. "That was the draw that made us so proud to be a part of this program."

Bell came to IPFW in 2007 from Southern Illinois University. In six years as athletic director at IPFW, Bell oversaw five regular season Summit League Championships and five NCAA tournament berths in different sports.

"I want to not forget our most recent friends in Fort Wayne," Bell says of IPFW. "Those people have given me a lot of opportunities to bring new and innovative situations to athletics."

IPFW released a statement Thursday afternoon praising Bell's tenure at the university.

“Tommy has been with IPFW for six years and in that time has helped usher Athletics into a new era with marked successes," IPFW chancellor Vicky Carwein said in a university statement. “We wish him the best as he takes on a new role and are looking forward to many more Athletics department successes.”

IPFW says the search for a new athletic director will begin immediately, and an interim athletic director will be named during the transition period.
