MUNCIE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - Ball State University has hired James Whitford as the new men's basketball head coach.

Whitford, 41, comes to Ball State from a four year tenure as an assistant at the University of Arizona. The last two years Whitford served as associate head coach.

"This job became one I targeted over the last few weeks," Whitford says in a statement released by the university Saturday morning. "Ball State offers the best combination of academic excellence, basketball tradition, outstanding arena and fan support of any school in the Mid-American Conference."

Before moving to Arizona with head coach Sean Miller, Whitford was part of Miller's staff at Xavier University. He was an assistant coach at Miami University for 11 seasons before that.

Whitford graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1994, and served as a manager for the Badgers men's basketball program during his college years.

"In a very talented pool of candidates, James separated himself," athletic director Bill Scholl included in the statement. "He is an excellent fit for our campus."

Whitford specializes in defense and post player development and will bring excitement to Ball State's basketball program, Scholl says.

Whitford will be introduced at a press conference Wednesday.
