FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - Coaches from Purdue University's athletic teams returned to Fort Wayne on Tuesday night to spend the evening with alumni and fans.
John Purdue Club held the Purdue Coaching Caravan at Fort Wayne Country Club. New football coach Darrell Hazell, men's basketball head coach Matt Painter, women's volleyball coach Dave Shondell, athletic Morgan Burke and basketball legend Brian Cardinal all made the trip to the Summit City. The event allows teams to recap a year in their respective sports and preview the upcoming seasons.
Hazell takes over a team following the firing of Danny Hope and a blowout loss to Oklahoma State in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Hazell is happy with how the Boilermakers practiced in the spring and ready to get back to work when the summer no-contact season is over.
"You got to get all the little details to help you be successful," Hazell says. "the biggest thing we understand is there's no one bigger than the team."
The men's basketball team comes off a mediocre season that saw many new faces looking to develop while earn a spot in the line-up.
"It's a perfect time for some young guys to come in and have a great opportunity," Painter says. "It's a perfect time for some young guys that got experience to make a big jump."
One of those players taking advantage of the experience is Rapheal Davis. The Fort Wayne guard averaged 8 points per game in the final stretch of 8 games of the season.
"He was really mature in his approach," Painter says of Davis. "You find out about somebody's character when they hit some adversity."
Painter is also pleased about incoming freshman guard Bryson Scott from Northrop.
"He gives us something we don't have. He's a very aggressive player. The one thing he'll help us most in is our culture."
Roughly 200 people attended the Purdue Coaches Caravan.
