NASCAR Changes Rules For Exiting Cars

August 15, 2014 Updated Aug 15, 2014 at 10:24 AM EST

BROOKLYN, Mich. (21Alive) -- NASCAR is adding a new rule restricting when drivers can exit their car after a crash.

The rule orders driver to remain in their vehicle after a crash unless there are emergency circumstances, such as a fire, that forces them out. The driver can eventually exit when an official directs them to.

The rule comes just less than a week since Kevin Ward Jr. was killed at a dirt-track race in New York.
