Late Portugal Goal Nets 2-2 Tie With U,S,

MANAUS, BRAZIL (21 Alive) - Varela scored on a header off a cross from Cristiano Ronaldo in the final seconds of stoppage time Sunday night to give Portugal a 2-2 tio with the United States in first round World Cup pool play.

The Americans' who surrendered an early goal to trail 1-0 at the half, rallied for the lead in the second half on ooals by Jermaine Jones and Clint Dempsey.

But the perfect pass from Ronaldo to Varela created the tie that kept Portugal alive in the tournament

The U.S. can reach the next round with either a win over or a tie with Germany on Thursday.
