WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (21Alive) - Sophomore Danny Etling will start the season for the Purdue Boilermakers as quarterback.
Purdue head coach Darrell Hazell announced the selection Monday at practice.
"I was excited I get to have another season to continue to keep growing and keep improving with my team," Etling says.
Etling edged out fellow sophomore Austin Appleby to lead the offense. The two had been splitting first-team reps during camp.
"They both played extremely well for the first two weeks," Hazell says. "Coming out of the spring (Etling) was a little ahead. I felt that after the spring season, he has the edge; and someone has to take it from him."
Etling started the Boilers' final seven games of 2013. Purdue lost all of the games, but Etling threw 10 touchdowns and 7 interceptions on 56 percent completions.
Purdue opens the season Aug. 30 against Western Michigan.
