Dons Win Doubleheader

Fort Wayne (incnow.tv)- A Dani Pugh sixth-inning home run in the opener, and a sixth-inning sacrifice fly in the afternoon finale helped push IPFW to a pair of 2-1 wins in the season-ending series over the IUPUI Jaguars on Friday.

Ashleigh Bousquet was 4-for-6 on the day for the Mastodons, with Alex Bousquet and Hillary Kartman each picking up two hits. Alex Bousquet scored twice, while Pugh drove in a pair. Starting pitchers Miranda Kramer and Megan Flenniken each tossed a complete game for the Mastodons, Kramer striking out 11 and Flenniken striking out eight, giving up three and two hits, each.

In the opener, the Mastodons struck first in the third inning when Kayti Hanson hit a one-out single down the left field line, before being driven home a batter later on a double by Alex Bousquet, putting the 'Dons ahead 1-0.

The one-run margin would hold for an inning and a half until IUPUI's Aundria Basquez reached on a bunt single to the second baseman, before being driven in on a hard-hit triple to right field by Morgan Schlobohm, knotting the score at one run apiece.

IUPUI threatened again in the top of the sixth with a one-out double, but a fly-out and strikeout ended the threat for the Jaguars.

The Mastodons capitalized on the missed opportunity from their in-state rival, as Dani Pugh hit a one-out blast over the wall in left field to push the 'Dons ahead 2-1 in the game.

The Jaguars once again threatened in the top of the seventh, as the innings' leadoff hitter, Alicia Brewer, was hit by a pitch, before being moved over on a sacrifice bunt. After a wild pitch moved Brewer to third, Kramer proceeded to strike out the next two batters to seal the game for the 'Dons.

Kartman was 2-for-3 for IPFW, as four others - Hanson, Alex Bousquet, Ashleigh Bousquet, and Pugh - had hits. Kramer scattered three hits over the seven innings, walking one and hitting three others, improving to 20-7, in the process becoming the first pitcher in school history to eclipse the 20-win plateau.

After setting the Jaguars down in order in the top of the first, the Mastodons struck quickly in the bottom half of the inning when Alex Bousquet singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, before scoring on an RBI double by her twin sister.

From there, the Mastodon bats went cold, producing only two hits for the next four innings. IUPUI's offense could barely get a foothold in the game, picking up just two hits in the game, the first on a second inning leadoff single from Angela Bartucci, and the second on a fifth inning RBI double to right center field, scoring Eryn Dillon, who walked two batters earlier.

A scoreless fifth inning followed, before Alex Bousquet led off the sixth inning with a walk, before being driven to third on her sisters' second double of the game. Pugh followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to put IPFW ahead for good in the game.

The Jaguars were able to draw a walk in the top of the seventh, but nothing else as IPFW held on for a second straight 2-1 victory over IUPUI.

Ashleigh Bousquet was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, with Alex Bousquet and Audrey Mintari picking up the team's other two hits in the contest.

Flenniken gave up just two hits in the game, striking out eight and walking three, improving to 9-6 this year.

The Mastodons and Jaguars meet up for the final game of the 2013 regular season on Saturday at noon at the IPFW Softball Field. The game will also be the team's "Pink Out" event, with opportunities at the game to donate, and all proceeds going to the Jil Youth Sports Foundation.
