Bowling Green, Kentucky (incnow.tv)- For the second day in a row, the TinCaps squeaked out a one-run win over the Hot Rods, winning 5-4 on Memorial Day. Fort Wayne’s Stephen Carmon scored Jeremy Baltz on a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie.

Just as they had in the first two games of the series, the TinCaps scored in their first turn to the plate. With an undefeated Jeff Ames on the mound for the Hot Rods, Mallex Smith singled to start the game and scored on a triple by Alberth Martinez. Maxx Tissenbaum proceeded to drive home Martinez to make it 2-0. Gabriel Quintana followed with a single of his own to extend his team-best hitting streak to 12 games. Two batters later, Baltz plated Tissenbaum with a single, too, and the TinCaps led 3-0.

Although Bowling Green scored one in the home first against Max Fried, Fort Wayne pushed its lead back to three in the top of the third inning. Quintana and Baltz both singled, so there were runners at the corners for Brian Adams, who collected an RBI-single to push home Quintana and give the TinCaps a 4-1 edge.

The Hot Rods responded with two runs against Fried in the bottom half of the third to climb within a run at 4-3. Fried exited the game after four innings and was replaced by Matt Chabot. The right-handed reliever allowed the first four batters he faced to reach base on a pair of walks and two singles, but after allowing one run, Chabot buckled down to strike out two in a row and induce an inning-ending flyout to keep the game tied, 4-4.

The game stayed knotted, 4-4, until the top of the eighth inning. Baltz, who finished the game 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI, led off with a single. Adams, who went 3-for-4, then doubled, moving Baltz to third. With one out, Carmon lifted a fly ball to medium-right field that Joey Rickard caught. Baltz tagged up from third base and just barely beat Rickard’s throw, as the TinCaps went in front, 5-4.

Leonel Campos, pitching for the second day in a row, earned his first win of the season for Fort Wayne after throwing a scoreless seventh and eighth inning. Roman Madrid, who also worked on Sunday, earned his ninth save of the season.

With the win, the TinCaps move to within 1.5 games of the Hot Rods for the Eastern Division’s wild card spot.

Fort Wayne returns home to Parkview Field to begin a seven-game homestand that starts Tuesday at 7:05 against the Lansing Lugnuts. Defiance, OH native Justin Hancock is slated to start for Fort Wayne against Lansing’s Ben White.
