WATERLOO, Ind. (21Alive) - It has been one hurdle after another for the DeKalb High School football team over the past few years.

The Barons have won only 4 of the last 40 games; and the seniors are on their third coach of their high school career.

Enter Mike DeVos, who takes over as interim head coach after the unceremonious departure of Mike Cochran five days into the regular season.

"The system doesn't change as far as numbering and things," DeVos says. "We are throwing in a few new plays, and just some things I'm comfortable with."

DeKalb has five seniors and a lot of two-way players, which will provide another test to the Barons.

"We got a bunch of quick guys," wide receiver/linebacker Jordan Isaac says. "They can carry the ball very well, and they got very good footwork. We're getting our blocks pretty well, and the line's working very hard.

DeKalb has seen its fair share of obstacles, and a tough Northeast Hoosier Conference awaits them mid-season.

"We really like utilizing the speed that we have, so we're going to try to utilize that as much as possible. We're going to try and use our strengths, and work off that."

DeKalb opens with Mishawaka Marian on Aug. 23 at home, and intend to take the season one week at a time.
