INDIANAPOLIS (21Alive) - The National Football League has suspended Indianapolis Colts defensive end Robert Mathis four games for a violation of the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.

Mathis said in a statement the positive test came from fertility treatments prescribed by a doctor.

"I specifically asked the doctor if the medication he prescribed for me would present a problem for NFL drug testing," Mathis said in a statement. Unfortunately, he incorrectly told me that it would not."

The medication was not named.

The Colts said in a statement that they will support Mathis in his "difficult challenge" that has led to his suspension.

"We nevertheless wish to assure Robert and our fans that he remains an honored and cherished member of the Colts family and that we support him as he deals with this difficult challenge," the statement read.

Mathis said he and the NFL Players Association provided the league medical records in an effort to avoid suspension, but the request was denied by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Mathis also announced in his statement that his wife is expecting their first child after he took the fertility treatments.
