NEW HAVEN, Ind. (21Alive) - East Allen County Schools board voted Tuesday night to allow homeschooled students to participate on the district's high school athletic teams.
Homeschooled student-athletes who meet Indiana High School Athletic Association criteria are permitted to join EACS teams this school year.
Criteria for homeschooled students to play for IHSAA member schools are:
2. The student is enrolled and attends, full-time, a non public
accredited school the student may have eligibility to participate in
the athletic program at the Indiana public school the student's
residence, provided that:
the Indiana Department of Education,
meeting the provisions, of Rule 18-1 of the IHSAA by-laws during
the time period between the time period and the corresponding
(1) full credit subject offered within the member school building.
EACS officials believe the district is the first in the state to allow homeschooled athletes to play for IHSAA member schools.
"East Allen County Schools is proud to be the pioneer in this arena," Dr. Kenneth Folks, EACS superintendent, said in a statement. "We're anxious to serve the community by providing an opportunity for
these student athletes to participate within our athletic programs."
IHSAA approved participation of homeschooled athletes on Apr. 29.
"The IHSAA Board of Directors expanded the opportunity for additional high school-aged students in our state to experience the values of education-based athletics," IHSAA commissioner Bobby Cox said in a statement after the April vote. "I am very pleased that the Board of Directors has embraced this concept as our Association continues its pursuit of becoming more inclusive while maintaining appropriate academic standards."
Four EACS high schools--Heritage, Leo, New Haven and Woodlan--are IHSAA member schools that field teams in sanctioned boys and girls sports.
