FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – Friends and family members of Jeremiah Morgan raise money to support the soldier through cancer.

Sometimes it's necessary to serve those who serve and protect us and our country. That was the idea behind the "We Got Your Back" 5K at Foster Park Sunday afternoon.

Participants completed the run not for themselves, but for a local soldier named Jeremiah Morgan, who was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

Morgan also currently serves with the 1/293rd Infantry Battalion with the Indiana Army National Guard.

Organizers say it feels good to assist a friend and father.

“It feels great to be helping Jeremiah and his family. Jeremiah has four kids, a seven-year-old, a three-year-old, and two eleven-week-old babies. We know that we're helping them and financially making them stable so they have less stress so they can take care of the babies like they should,” said Mindy Bartlett, organizer.

Immediately following the run, both a silent auction and raffle were held to benefit Jeremiah.
