FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – Veterans Day programs were held at Memorial Park and Cathedral of Praise Ministries International Church at the Destiny Dome Embassy to honor local veterans.
Members of VFW Post 10006 and their families assembled at Memorial Park for a Veterans Day service Sunday morning.
Allison Mansfield, a senior at Homestead High School and founder of Operation U.S. Troop Support, spoke to area veterans at the service. She says the importance of celebrating Veterans Day and understanding its significance cannot be understated.
“Veterans Day is enormously important. All the freedoms we have as citizens of the United States, you know to worship, to go to school, to speak freely, all those are paid for by the sacrifices of an American veteran, and I don't think we can ever thank them enough for their sacrifice,” Mansfield says.
Three rifle shots to commemorate the dead were fired by members of VFW Post 857. They also performed Taps.
The ceremony came to a close at 11:11 a.m., to commemorate Armistice Day, the official end to World War I.
Vietnam vets also enjoyed a service at the Cathedral of Praise Ministries off of Harris Road in Fort Wayne. The service, led by 1st District Allen County Councilman Kevin Howell, a Marine Corps veteran, served as the official start to a yearlong series of programs dedicated to Vietnam veterans and their families.
Howell says it is time for the country to recognize the sacrifice made by Vietnam veterans and their families.
“My attitude is that after 50 years, it's time to come together, it's time to recognize these guys for the contribution they made for the defense of our country.”
The events commemorating their sacrifice and service will culminate with a national celebration marking the 50 year anniversary of the start to the Vietnam War Saturday, October 5, 2013.
Howell is the chairman and president of the Vietnam veterans of America National Homecoming 2013.
