Fort Wayne, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - The United Way is again gearing up for a busy tax season. Every year the organization offers free tax preparation services to local families. This Saturday is the first day their locations will be open.
More than 2,000 people in our area are expected to use the United Way to file their taxes this year.
In order to be eligible your family income must be under $57,000. The majority of the people they help are in Allen County however they do offer these services in other nearby counties.
When you go to file you need a picture ID and social security card. You also need your W-2, unemployment or 1099 forms. In addition, you should have your landlords information or your property tax information along with any expenses that could be tax deductible, like child care.
"It's designed for low and moderate income families who really can't afford paid preparers, and we all know what it's like to start kind of getting into doing our own taxes, sometimes that's not really... you miss things, you don't know about things, you misunderstand things and so this keeps the error rate down," said Nancy Flennery, United Way of Allen County.
Their two main sites are Community Action of Northeast Indiana and at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. CANI is open Monday and Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. St. Mary’s is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from noon to 3:00 p.m.
