NEW HAVEN, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - The recent sexual assault on the New Haven portion of the Rivergreenway is a first for that stretch of the trail. And it has some people worried about walking on the popular trail system while others aren’t taken back by the crime.

It happened Tuesday between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. New Haven Police say a woman was jogging on the Rivergreenway, near the intersection of Landin and Rose Avenue, when a man held her at knife point, dragged her into the woods and sexually assaulted her.

"It is kind of scary to think someone's doing that around here,” said Jodi Gonzalez.

Gonzalez walks the Rivergreenway almost daily. She says she's always felt safe, but hearing of this incident worries her.

For another frequent guest of the Rivergreenway, a father of teen girls, it doesn't have him worried at all about walking his typical route on the pathway.

"It happens everywhere, all over the city. I don't think this place is anymore unsafe or safe than anywhere else,” said Jeff White.

"It's sad to think people would do these kinds of things, especially on something that's supposed to be a park type of setting,” said Mayor Terry McDonald.

"It's safe, but to make it safer you should obviously be with someone else, travel in pairs, try to refrain from using ear buds, you can purchase mace,” said Officer Darren Peterson, New Haven Police Department.

Officer Peterson also suggests holding your keys between your fingers and always having a cell phone handy.

"It's sad to think that we have to be that way, but the world's a lot different that it was even just a few years ago,” said Mayor McDonald.

So far no arrests have been made. Police are hoping someone will be able to come forward with information.

"Any little thing can help, you know, turn a leaf over, you know so any information at all please contact us immediately,” said Officer Peterson.

The New Haven Police Department can be contacted at 260-493-1517.
