PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (21Alive) -- Today is Groundhog Day and that means Punxsutawney Phil made his annual winter forecast this morning. He saw his shadow, which is supposed to mean winter will last another month-and-a-half.

In reality, the prediction is decided by a group called the "Inner Circle" the ones who host the celebration. Records show that since 1887 Phil has seen his shadow 101 times and didn't see it 17 times.

In Indiana, we could have used any sign of relief even if it's steeped in superstition. This winter has been one for the record books bringing large snow totals and sub-zero temperatures. With more snow coming next week this winter is starting to seem like the movie Groundhog Day to some of us.

However, you should't take Phil's prediction too seriously according to the National Climactic Data Center. They took a look at Phil's forecasts and decided the groundhog has "no predictive skill."

The center somewhat obviously pointed out that taking a groundhog's weather forecast seriously was "not a bright idea."
