FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – Instead of rollin’ on the river, it’s more like rowing on the river for the local group taking a nine-day canoe trip up the Maumee River.

Members with Save Maumee Grassroots Organization began their nine-day canoe trip from Fort Wayne to Toledo, Ohio Saturday morning.

Save Maumee members say they want people to fall in love with our waterways.

The organization aims to preserve, protect, and improve the eco-systems of the upper Maumee River by increasing public awareness, educating people about the rivers, and doing hands-on projects like this trip they're taking.

“The entire group is going to be ten boats, twenty people and then we are going to paddle down the Maumee River and against entrenched behaviors,” said Abigail King, Founder of Save Maumee Grassroots Organization.

The group will reach its destination at International Park in Toledo on April 26.
