INDIANA, (www.incnow.tv) --- Indiana is not a particularly safe place for minorities, that’s a conclusion you could draw from a new report put out by a gun violence prevention group.
The study from the Violence Policy Center in Washington D.C. ranked Indiana 6th in the nation in 2010 for the highest homicide rate for blacks.
There were about 24 homicides involving blacks for every 100,000 people, which is more than five times the national overall homicide rate.
In the 153 crimes where a weapon could be identified, 136 of the black victims were killed with guns.
That represents 89 percent of the cases.
It reinforces why our country is caught up in such a contentious debate right now over gun violence and how to deal with it in an appropriate way.
There is one other noteworthy statistic in the study.
In Indiana homicides in 2010 involving black victims, where a victim to offender relationship could be identified, 85 percent of the time those victims were killed by someone they knew.
