FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – Despite the rising number of bank robberies in the area, statistics are showing it’s not just banks being robbed any more.

According to Police Chief Rusty York, robberies in general have been trending up this year compared to last. He says "total crime is reported to the uniform crime report is up in Fort Wayne by about 6% - the lower 6% - compared to the same time last year. But robberies are up about 40%.”

That number is actually closer to 43.5% compared to this point in 2011, but Chief York says it's not necessarily armed robberies that they are seeing more frequently, but petty theft - meaning smaller "person-to-person" type robberies like purse snatching, muggings, and pick-pocketing.

"We see robberies of individuals up disproportionately, and that's a little bit unusual as well,” York says.

So what can you do to protect yourself – especially around the holidays? Be sure to use caution when walking outside shopping malls and various stores. And always keep your purse and shopping bags close to your body.

If you should see some suspicious people, cars, or activity do not hesitate to call police.
