FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- Occupy Fort Wayne -- the Summit City version of the Occupy Wall Street protests -- is gearing up for Saturday's planned protest.
Members of the Mayor’s Office, Fort Wayne Parks Department and the Fort Wayne Police Department met at Lakeside Park Thursday evening with members of Occupy Fort Wayne to discuss Saturday’s planned occupation of the downtown area.
The occupation, originally planned for One Summit Square, will have to be moved according to FWPD because it is private property. They will however be able to organize there before moving.
After organizing at One Summit Square, Occupy Fort Wayne preliminarily plans to march to the Allen County Court House to gather and speak there. Finally, they have been advised that they will be able to occupy the west end of Headwaters Park for the rest of Saturday, through the night and into Sunday. Fort Wayne Deputy Chief of Police Marty Bender says the west end of Headwaters Park makes the most logistical sense because of its location and availability of restroom facilities.
Occupiers at Thursday night’s meeting say that their movement is more than a six, 12 or 24 hour protest. They say they plan to occupy the spaces available to them until they see the change they are demanding. Bender says occupiers will be asked to leave the west end of Headwaters Park by 11 p.m. Sunday when the park closes. Bender says occupiers who refuse to leave will first be warned, then issued citations and will possibly be arrested if they refuse to vacate Headwaters Park.
Occupiers say they represent the 99 percent of Americans unaffiliated with corporations. They say they are fighting corporate greed, corporate welfare and a corrupt system of money in politics and government. They say the 99 percent refers to everyone from teachers and taxi cab drivers to construction workers.
