Fort Wayne, Ind (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - The new section of U.S. 24 connecting Fort Wayne and Toledo is on track to open sooner than expected.
The new 11 mile stretch could be open by November. It had been planned to be completed by December.
This new section of roadway will keep drivers off the 2 lane road they've always traveled on. Instead they will be on a 4 lane highway.
INDOT credits good weather this spring and summer to helping the project move along quickly.
"As of this spring we were still saying December 1. Now we're hopeful, like I said, to be maybe even a month earlier. They've just been managing to stay on schedule and so now it's a little bit of paving, but evaluation and reviewing at this point," said Mary Foster, INDOT.
This new stretch of U.S. 24 will connect I-469 with the recently new section that runs through Ohio. The project has gained the nickname Fort to Port.
