BLUFFTON, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - An afternoon of fishing and swimming turned tragic when a man drowned in Wells County.

Conservation officers say Matthew Zoll was fishing with Christopher Dager and two 8 year old boys, Spencer Black and Russell Taylor, in the Wabash River near County Road 450 East.

Then, while the boys were swimming, Russell fell into a deep hole. Officials say Spencer tried to pull Russell out, but got stuck as well.

Zoll and Dager jumped in to save the boys. Dager was able to rescue Spencer while Zoll had trouble getting Russell out. Dager returned to help and saved Russell, but Zoll went under water and did not resurface.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene a short time later. They, with the help of a swim coach who was also at the scene, pulled Zoll's body out of the river.

He was prondounced dead at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
